A New Look at Cutting Expenses

It’s rapidly becoming a cliche that, in today’s economy, the average American family can’t afford to spend money without good reason. With that in mind, many of us have had to tighten our belts and do what we can to cut back on expenses. Turning off the lights, car pooling to save gas, and opening a window instead of turning on the A/C are all great ways to start, but where do you go from there? How do you cut back even further?

Often, the first place to look for money leaks is in your choice of entertainment. Cable TV, Internet service, going out to eat and other expenses can all be cut back or eliminated entirely without seriously damaging your quality of life. Going for walks, reading books, and playing games with your family easily replace these things, and $10 will go much farther at the grocery store than at Mcdonald’s.

Next are the other luxuries in your life. Manicures, pedicures, and facials are all highly unnecessary and often highly expensive. They can generally be cut with no problem. Now, hair cuts are indeed important. However, it’s easy to wash your hair at home and only get a simple cut, which will usually save you a good amount. You might also consider purchasing a set of clippers for the men in your family. A buzz cut might not be the most fun or attractive look, but it’s quick, simple, and free to do from your own home.

The biggest trick to cutting back expenses is understanding the difference between “need” and “nice to have”. It’s easy to get caught up in thinking that you need television, Internet, a perm or a cheeseburger. The truth is, though, that these things are not necessary. They are simply obstacles to you having money for the things you really need.

So keep an eye on your expense, and don’t pull out your wallet before truthfully asking yourself “Do I really NEED this?” Be consistent, and you’ll quickly find that money isn’t quite so hard to come by as it once seemed.
