Tax time is right around the corner in the US, and that means that you really need to get as organized as possible if you really want to stay on top of things. Yes, it’s tempting to think that you’re going to be able to take care of everything on your own, but it’s really a lot better to make sure that you focus on the bigger picture. If you don’t take care of your taxes, you can bet that you will find the IRS getting in touch with you. In a down economy, it’s even more important to make sure that everything is collected properly. So not paying your taxes can have some pretty big consequences when you really think about it. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself owing a lot of penalties. And deep down, you probably already know that there’s no such thing as not paying the IRS.

They will find a way to get their money from you, and it might be at a time where you really need the money for other purposes. So it’s really in your best interest to make sure that you are absolutely getting the money to the proper people. That comes from being organized. A lot of people assume that it’s all about making sure that you rush everything at the last minute, but this is something that’s only going to slow you down in the long run. If you stop and realize that it’s better to be organized, you will give yourself a lot more time to make better decision. So you need to make sure that you focus on what matters. You have to be able to focus on what really will make a difference. You can’t find yourself unable to get things done just because there are a few complications going on.

If you want to get organized before tax time, this is what you really need to do.

Right now, since you have time off from work after the holidays, you will want to get all of your recipes in place. This is especially important if you’re thinking about going with a tax preparer. Dumping a shoebox on their desk and running out the door might be easy for you, but it’s not going to be easy for them. That means that they will probably charge you extra time for all of the time that they have to spend untangling your mess. This costs you in the long run, so you want to make sure that you get it right. If you don’t have the right receipt for a purchase, make sure that you find some way to recreate the document. If that means that you contact the original seller and get a receipt made up again, that’s what you’re going to have to do. If the IRS doesn’t feel your deductions are valid, they’re going to kick them out and you’ll have to star tall over again. You don’t want to skip this step at all, it’s just too important!

Now that you’re thinking about your taxes, you also want to go back and check any estimated tax payments that you were supposed to make. If you are self-employed, then most of your taxes are paid this way. You also want to make sure that your address is correct so that if anyone needs to get in touch with you for your 1099’s or other income documents, you can go ahead and give those over to them.

Now is the time to get organized, because if you wait till April you could rush and end up costing yourself money. You can either get the information wrong and cause yourself to get less refund than what you might be expecting, or you can end up making it so that you have to pay more taxes than what you were expecting. It’s really important to make sure that you have as much time as possible to get your taxes right, because the consequences of getting them wrong can really be severe!

Are you thinking about the economy? Chances are good that you are. Indeed, a lot of people are thinking about all of the options that they have in a bad economy, and that means that they really want to make sure that they can make the right decision at the right time. We all know that when you don’t think about the decisions that you need to make, nothing gets done. However, timing is everything — striking while the proverbial iron is hot really does make a difference.

The basic problem is this — when you don’t know when you’re going to get a good job again, you don’t know when it’s safe to spend. So you might really want to dip into your savings to get certain things you like, but if you really don’t feel like you’re going to be able to get a good job, then it’s really all worthless. You just need to make sure that you focus on the things that matter rather than the things that don’t. If you can manage your debts, pay the bills, and still have a little bit to save, then you’re already ahead of so many people that have to struggle day in and day out. It’s really up to you to make sure that you’re really creating the type of life that you ultimately want to get.

The first area that you can tackle if you’re really trying to figure out your options is going to be your job. You will need to be honest with yourself — you can honestly see yourself leaving your job? A lot of people think that they are going to be able to just quit their job, but the reality here is that when you really want to do something else, the current job can’t offer you anything to really stay. The only type of exception would be if you wanted to do something else within the company — a lateral move rather than a true promotion. Talking with the right people in your company can be a start and they might see it as a way of you staying loyal to the company. Every company is going to be different. Some people treasure employees that want to work hard and toe the party line for years and years. Others feel that if you’re already restless, then another company can possibly get you. So they’ll drop you in order to go with someone that they might feel will stay more loyal to them. It’s really a toss up sometimes!

What you really need to do from here is try to think about the roadmap you have planned — do you really want to go back to school to learn something else? Do you qualify for financial aid? What type of financial aid do you qualify for? If you’re not sure, you need to get in touch with someone within the financial aid department of the school that you really want to go to. Even if you’re thinking about going to an online college there are still people that you need to be in touch with.

Don’t forget that you do not have to make these decisions on your own. No matter where you live, there should be some type of assistance program that you can check into. Yes, the economy is bad but these agencies know that and they are trying to connect skilled people with the local workforce in order to make things happen for you. Don’t give up before you know where you stand. Having a good resume on standby that you can send out to employers while you wait on something better to happen is always a good thing.

Now is the time to seize the day and build the life that you really want. Yes, even in a bad economy there are opportunities. If there’s one thing that the current recession has taught us, it’s that we really need to make sure that we reach out and seize the opportunities that we have. Don’t wait till next week to try to get the things that matter to you today — start today! You will not regret it at all!

Social Security has been a hot button issue since the days of LBJ, and that distinction is not likely to go away anytime soon. You’re going to want to think about Social Security as it applies to you, and that only makes sense. After all, when you look at your paystub and see that Social Security taxes have already been taken out, you might think to yourself you’ll never see Social Security in your lifetime. That means that you will need to really think about the bigger picture, which can be hard to do when it seems that everyone and their cousin has an opinion about Social Security. if you ask most people, they will tell you that there’s no way that Social Security will ever be around for you when you get old, which means that you’re essentially paying your Social Security taxes for no reason other than to support the current wave of retirement candidates. Is that fair? Not really, but that’s the system that we live under.

Of course, there could be a contrary view here, that Social Security concerns are being greatly exaggerated and that means that you’re going to still have hope for keeping your retirement. We think that it’s more or less in the middle between these two views. While Social Security isn’t going to just go quietly into that good night, we also have to remind people that it’s not going to be the way you would expect when you retire.

Yet that’s not a bad thing at all. The assumption that a lot of people make when it comes to Social Security is that it’s something that’s supposed to let you retire, and that’s not the case at all. It’s always been a supplement to retirement, a little boost to help you along. There’s no reason to give up your current annuities or pensions or anything else that you have in the bank designed to make your golden years a little more golden. We have t stop assuming that the government is supposed to take care of our every little need, and that’s the underlying feelings behind the push on Social Security. Don’t get us wrong — Social Security is still a good thing that helps a lot of people. But the cost of that “good thing” is the issue here, and we’re paying a lot higher cost than we should.

If you’re worried at all about Social Security, take that alarm as a great time to start your own investing life. Start reading up on what good investors do and take small steps. There’s nothing wrong with going towards the index funds rather than trying to play hot potato with the stock market, running from hot tip to hot tip. You’re going to need to decide that you don’t have to be financially illiterate anymore – with the rise of the Internet and all of the free information out there to get you started, there’s no reason why you can’t make the best run of this for your own purposes.

Getting everything in line is a smart idea, and getting things organized can take some time but it’s definitely worth it. Why not make sure that you have all of your ducks in a row today? After all — if you already have a great blueprint for retirement, then it doesn’t matter what happens to Social Security, really!

Here’s a subject that no one really wants to deal with — setting up your will, or revisiting your will. However, it’s an issue that you really need to tackle right here, right now. Otherwise, it’s just going to end up making your family’s life a lot less vibrant and a lot less healthy from every angle. How can we say that? Well, we’ve seen it too many times — if there’s no will in place, it’s a rollercoaster of uncertainty and instability. No one knows what goes to whom, and there’s a lot of fighting. Now, we’re not saying that a will eliminates hard feelings and emotions completely. However, if we had our choices, we would take steps while we’re alive to make a will that spells out exactly who gets what.

So let’s revisit the will you set up, okay? That’s right — just because you set up a will doesn’t mean that you should just let it collect dust. You will still want to make sure that everyone listed in your will is exactly where they need to be. What if you got divorced and you no longer want your first wife to be able to just take your assets? Maybe you have a second wife that needs to get everything. What about who needs to watch over your children? That should be spelled out in your will and updated at least every year or two.

You don’t have to get a lawyer to update your will, but it’s not a bad idea to get an attorney with experience to go ahead and touch up your will. This is something where things can get nasty in hurry, and that means that you will need to make sure that even if you weren’t here to defend your wishes, things will go smoothly.

Since most lawyers charge by the hour, this is not something that has to cost a lot of money — but you do need to get started!

Bankruptcy is a process that can really stress you out and wear you down. You don’t need to feel like it’s absolutely impossible to get the things you want — you just need to make sure that you really figure out what to include in the bankruptcy itself. Since bankruptcy is considered to be a clean slate and a chance to start over at a new life, you should make sure that you are including all of the right things — and leaving out the things that would be better suited to other methods of debt reduction and elimination.

The truth is that you will need to disclose just about everything that you possibly can and then double check to make sure that you haven’t left anything out. A lot of people make jokes that bankruptcy truly opens up your life in many ways, but there’s nothing really laughter-inducing about it. Seriously — you will need to disclose your financial history, income, assets, and debts. Now, what a lot of people get caught up on is that you can choose to keep paying certain debts in spite of the bankruptcy. This means that you’re reaffirming those debts instead of just letting them pass on by. This can help you keep your property that really matters, like your house and your car. However, you will still need to check with your lenders and make sure that you have to reaffirm the debt. A lot of the time the lender will just let you keep making your payments as if the bankruptcy had never happened — all without making you actually on the hook for those payments. If you were to stop making payments, you would simply lose the property — definitely not something that people are actually looking to do.

When it comes right down to it, just about every debt that’s holding you down needs to be included in the bankruptcy. Yes, there are debts that may not be eligible for discharge. For example, if you have student loans, those are pretty tough to discharge in bankruptcy. That’s why so many financial circuits tell you not to actually do anything as crazy as take out a bunch of student loans that you know you cannot pay back. Private student loans are great — they’re helping a lot of people go back to school and then some. However, they can trap people and make them feel like there’s truly no way out, and that’s not a good thing at all.

Moving back to the world of bankruptcy, if you’re ever unsure about how to disclose your information properly, you need to consult with a bankruptcy advocate and attorney. Even if you don’t want to hire an attorney, you at least need to have them look over all of your papers. Unless you’ve got a secret life as a bankruptcy lawyer, you’re bound to miss something that the bankruptcy lawyer would know off the top of their head. It’s nothing to feel embarrassed about — a lot of people don’t know a lot of things about every subject in the world. That’s why we have experts!

So, we definitely hope that this guide helps you when it’s time to start thinking more about the bankruptcy process — why not take action today? You’ll be definitely glad that you did!

Marriage is a time where you have a lot of decisions that you will need to make. There are two people involved, and possibly more when you think about a family. A lot of people end up feeling scared and helpless when a marriage is on the horizon, because the idea of pooling resources and building financial goals together is definitely going to be a serious matter. You don’t want to delay matters, but at the same time, you don’t want to feel like you have to struggle just to prove to other people that you can make things happen in your relationship. First and foremost, before you do anything, you need to still make sure that you are prepared to get married. Marriage is an important decision, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. You will be spending a great deal of time with the person you marry, and even if you feel that it’s not something you want to pursue, you shouldn’t do it. Divorce is very costly, which is why the idea that you will just “divorce if you don’t like them” isn’t a very solid plan.

Communication is really the name of the game here. You might think that it’s okay for one person to make all of the decisions, but you definitely don’t want to go down this road either. it’s too easy for someone to turn around and tell you that they really didn’t want to make those decisions, and that you bullied them into making choices that they wouldn’t have made if you had backed off and let them choose. While that’s not fair, that is the way it is. Proper communication is truly a must for a solid marriage.

But what about the financials? A lot of people overlook the type of money issues that can really sink a marriage, and it’s the financials that we’re going to cover today. So once you know that you’re in the right mindframe to talk about money, you should definitely consider the following points in your overall conversation.

Now, before we begin, another warning has to be understood — we’re not telling you to just go out and have this conversation in one long chunk. In fact, if you’ve really gotten serious about the person that you want to be with, you definitely don’t want to just go out and have a long conversation. The issues around money should be something that you already talk about with the person you want to marry.

Now then, here’s what you need to consider:

The first thing that you should consider is what type of goals the both of you have. Homeownership is one of the largest reasons why people marry, because they want to pool both incomes together and get a home. However, you will need to make sure that you really think about the type of house you want, as well as the steps that you will need to take with your future spouse in order to own property. You need to ensure that everyone involved is willing to pay equally on the house. In addition, you also need to talk about what would happen to the house if the two of you decide that things aren’t working out. It’s a complicated legal process as it is to buy a house, and you shouldn’t overlook that at all.

Another point that you might need to talk about is how money will actually be shared. A lot of people hate the idea of joint accounts, but they’re a good way to symbolically declare that you are a shared unit. However, a lot of people still see it as “their money” and it tends to get messy. In order to keep things from flying out of control, you will want to make sure that you really sit down and talk to your potential spouse — and better yet, get it into writing.

Speaking of writing, you’re probably wondering whether or not you should mention the possibility of a pre-nuptial agreement with your spouse. A lot of people think it’s unromantic, but we argue that a pre-nuptial agreement is one of the best gifts that you could give to each other. Simply put, when you decide to talk rationally and build a pre-nuptial agreement, you’re essentially talking about freeing each other from the messy aftermath of a divorce. Yes, there will still be hurt feelings — after all, you are essentially either being rejected by your spouse, or you are the one doing the rejecting. That’s a hard pill to swallow.

The pre-nuptial agreement is a gift that says that some things are more important than just material possessions. It’s not a matter of taking someone to the cleaners or hurting the other person by not giving them a dime. It’s all about making sure that the terms are spelled out so that there can be no feeling of betrayal when the divorce occurs. There are no bloody arguments about who gets what. By having a pre-nuptial agreement in place, everything is already spelled out.

Believe it or not, these agreements aren’t just for people that have a lot of money. Regular people have so much to lose in a divorce, so it’s actually a good idea to make sure that you have taken matters into your own hands with a pre-nuptial agreement. Keep in mind that you will want to probably have a lawyer draw up an agreement. It can cost a little money up front, but it’s an investment in your future — don’t skip over it!

One area that a couple really needs to think about is children. A lot of people really don’t give the subject as much thought as it deserves, but your feelings on children have a role on your finances. If you feel that children are a must in your life, you definitely want to make sure that you already prepare ahead of time to have them. This means focusing on stability as much as possible. Yes, it’s true that no one can ever fully prepare for children, but it definitely helps to already start your marriage out right by saving what you can.

Overall, as you might have already guessed, there are definitely a lot of things to think about when you’re really trying to prepare for a great life with someone. If you really take the time to talk these issues out in a clear manner — without screaming and yelling — then you will definitely be on your way to a great life!

Filing for bankruptcy is a pretty tough decision. In fact, if you asked 10 people on the street at random, there are good chances that many of them would mention fighting debt and handling their finances as a big, tough decision. Filing bankruptcy is a way that many people go to finally take care of their debt. Now, you might feel like bankruptcy is something that you should never consider, but the truth of the matter is that there will come a time where you have to stop and think about what is best for you and your family. Do you really want to come to a point where you won’t be able to take care of your family’s needs because you’re literally covered in debt?

However, filing for bankruptcy is not something that you should do on your own. You need to really think about getting expertise on your side, which means you will need to get a bankruptcy attorney. You can’t just pick the first name that you see, or even the first site that you search for. Your family’s future is at stake, and when you contract the services of your lawyer for a bankruptcy, you’re putting your family’s life into their hands.

Whoa. That’s heavy, on many levels. However, we can’t get around the serious nature of picking the right bankruptcy lawyer, the first time around. Not sure how to do that? That’s what we’re here for — here’s what you need to know in order to get the job done right.

First and foremost, you will need to look through your circle of friends for any referrals that they can give you. Of course, this implies that your friends will know that you’re applying for bankruptcy, but this shouldn’t be one of your first concerns. After all, you will need to think about your family’s future no matter what.

If you’ve gotten a few leads, this is a great time to actually go and melt your attorney in person. If you can go with a local firm, then this is definitely what you want to do. You want to be able to come into the office and ask questions at any time. You want to go with the law firm that has the most professionalism. Bankruptcy tends to bring out the most stressful side of human living these days, and you want to have a bankruptcy attorney that is truly an advocate for you. Make sure that you really check out their references and also their certifications — you want to make sure that they truly have the credentials that they say they do. Bankruptcy is something that gets thrown around a lot, and there are a lot of crooks hiding among great attorneys — make sure that you know the difference!

What you will need to do next is figure out what you want to avoid. For example, if you know that the lawyer in question has a history of slight bias from the reviews you receive from others, you will want to avoid them. When you’re speaking to the attorney directly, you will need to be wary of any attorney that makes guarantees or specific claims. Bankruptcy is something that changes rapidly, and the laws can get hazy. You never know what will be guaranteed, because it’s up tot eh courts to ultimately decide, especially in very sticky cases.

Now, if you have a simple bankruptcy, your process could be straightforward. Still, it’s never a bad idea to have representation just in case something doesn’t go your way.

Ultimately, it’s a matter of having constant contact. Bankruptcy is something too important to just “set and forget”, so if you’re looking for that you might want to look elsewhere.

Ready to get started? Great — contact a bankruptcy attorney in your state today!

The last few years have seen some really tough times for consumers in the United Kingdom, and the high levels of unemployment and government cuts are starting to have a real impact on everyone.

As a result people are starting to cut down, but not in the areas most people would expect. Whilst logically people would cut down on takeaway pizza and sky television, dominoes and sky subscriptions have soared and shockingly people are starting to cut down on their insurance instead.

Home insurance is one particular area where people can legally not take out insurance, which makes very little sense given the value of possessions in the home, and the actual structure itself.

While car insurance is a legal requirement of driving on the roads, home insurance is not, but the consequences of not having it are huge. There are a huge number of ways in which you could need to claim on your home insurance, and whilst many are extremely unexpected, flooding, theft, fire, can all happen and when they do the financial consequences are often extreme.

Home insurance is generally made up of two different parts, contents insurance and buildings insurance. Those who live in rented or leasehold accommodation may not need the buildings aspect of the cover as this may have been taken out by someone else, but their contents cover is a must.

Whilst some people are choosing to not take out home insurance altogether, others are choosing to underestimate the value of their possessions. This again is extremely risky as you will be surprised at how much the things you need in everyday life actually cost.

Many families’ wardrobe contents cost as much as £10,000, and by the time you have added necessities like pots and pans, a microwave, cutlery, crockery, glasses, a washing machine, a table and chairs to sit at, a sofa, a television and beds you start to understand why estimating the contents of your home accurately is so important, just in case you lose it all.

We’re going to go ahead and warn you up front — this article is all about strategy. It’s hard for some people to deal with the fact that you have to plan when you’re going to make life changes, but hey — you’re going to have to plan. In a perfect world everything would just align itself properly, but this world is far from perfect. So if you really want to make things happen, you’re going to have to just push forward with the best strategy you can get.

Divorce is a financial issue, not just an emotional one. If you’re the one walking away, you’re going to need to think about your financial future. If you have children, it’s even more important to really amok sure that you focus on the financial side of things. Your children deserve to have as little interruption of their lives as possible. A lot of people just assume that divorce is going to be what it’s going to be, so they don’t even try to make things turn out differently. Don’t fall into this trap.

Here are a few issues that make divorce either a bit more complicated, or a lot easier:

Children — yes, it’s true: children can definitely make a divorce a lot more complicated. One thing that you should definitely try to do is be reasonable for the children’s sake. If that means that you have to give up an asset in exchange for better custody terms, do it — it’s just material stuff that you can always get more of. Can you really replace your children? We didn’t think so.

Your home — Real estate is something that’s always a bit complicated. However, it doesn’t have to be. Just as you can compromise on other issues, you can compromise on the house that both of you shared while married. First and foremost, you will want to make sure that you talk to your spouse and see what they want to do. You should never assume that they will just want to stay in the house when it’s clear that they might want to do something else. The last thing that you should ever try to do is force someone to be somewhere that they don’t want to be. Instead of selling the house, you might offer to give up other property that is equal to the spouse’s part of the equity in the home. Of course, if you’re in a depressed market, then you won’t have to give up too much — there might not be any equity in the home. Therefore, you being on the hook for the mortgage payments can become another compromise.

If you’re having problems with your divorce, hiring an attorney is definitely the best way to go. Even if things start nice enough, they always have a potential to turn incredibly worse. That’s when people start making bad financial decisions that cause problems for the long term. It’s better to stay focused and realize that just because the marriage is over doesn’t mean that you should get nasty or emotional. It’s hard to be the logical one when someone else wants to be upset, but that’s where good counseling comes in. If you can get the other person to go with you, “exit counseling” can really come in handy. It just depends on what you really want to do and how you want to do it.

Overall, now is definitely the time to get strategic about your divorce. You might want to be the good guy but the truth is that if you aren’t going to be strategic, you can bet your whole paycheck and then some that the other party is thinking about their own strategy. It’s every person for themselves in a divorce, but thinking clearly about the whole process can definitely save you a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of heartache down the line!

Car finance options are available for people who cannot pay their entire down payment at once. There are many different types of finance managers who will try to draw you into their particular strength of game. You have to stay aware and up to date on the kinds of information you will have to digest before you go into a car finance option. Be aware of the kinds of things car finance managers are trying to do and this will make sure that you are not taken for all your money.

A car finance manager’s job is to get the most out of you per month as possible. If you have taken the initiative and gotten the money from a bank or another source, the finance manager will still try to make sure you are not paying back the original source and pay him instead.

The finance managers run on commission. The commissions come in even heavier when the finance manager gets you to arrange a car finance option through the dealership. This can raise your monthly payments.

Finance managers are also in the business of trying to sell you extended warranties. This also contributes to how much you pay for your monthly installments, but they might be a necessity.

Credit insurance is also offered in the case of the new owner dying in an accident. This would mean that the insurance company would pay the rest of the car loan. This is another commission based sale for the finance manager.

To try to increase how much you pay initially the finance manager will try to get you to pay for a lot of different add ons. Some of these add ons are rust proofing on your paint job or alarm systems installed.

You are going to need to have your own strategies in mind when you figure out how much you want to pay for a car finance option or for the car itself. You should start by negotiating with the total price of the car instead of the monthly payments. The dealers want to get the most they can from you via the monthly payments. If you negotiate in accordance to the price of the car instead of the monthly payments you will be able to control how much you will pay for the month instead of the dealer doing so. The dealer will give you an invoice of the monthly payments available for the car before the add ons and warranties.
